Emotional Literacy

Emotional literacy is one of the foundational building blocks for your childโ€™s future mental & emotional health.

Emotional literacy is made up ofโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ’› NOTICING EMOTIONS: being able to identify when they, or someone else, is feeling an emotion.

๐Ÿ’› NAMING EMOTIONS: being able to label each emotional state (eg. Happy, Sad, Angry, Scared).

๐Ÿ’› UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONS: knowing the meaning of the main emotions, & how to manage them in healthy ways.

To promote the development of emotional literacy in children, at home & in the classroom, you can:

๐Ÿƒ Practice naming different emotions as they arise
๐Ÿƒ Read books about characters experiencing different emotions
๐Ÿƒ Talk openly about feelings
๐Ÿƒ Use empathy in conflict resolution - โ€œHow do you think _______ might be feeling?โ€
๐Ÿƒ Use emotions check-ins - โ€œHow are you feeling today?โ€
๐Ÿƒ Use emotional problem solving - โ€œWhen we feel _________ what do you think we could do that would help us & others?โ€
