Mantra For When You Lose It
We’ve been in a pandemic for over a year now with isolation from loved ones and humans in general, little parental support, while managing work from home, educating kids, and self-care. Did I miss anything?
Expecting yourself to be a super parent is an illusion, in or out of a pandemic. Your child doesn’t need a perfect parent and in fact it would not serve them well in their adult lives to have perfect parents.
When we are free from needing to be perfect we can free our child from being perfect. We can embrace that there will be moments when they express their emotions in less than healthy ways and we express emotions in less than healthy ways because we’re messy, complex humans.
Today, place a hand on your heart and repeat this mantra: The messy moments of today do not define me or my relationship with my child. I am not broken and my child is not broken.
When you ‘lose it’ make a repair and let go of that moment. The moment does not define you or your relationship. If you find yourself frequently ‘losing it’ consider implementing the following:
- put your phone in a drawer and leave it there
- go outside
- ask your child fun questions to bring about giggles
- ask your child what they want to do, set a timer for 10 min and engage
- make a connection with someone in real life
- asking someone you trust for support
- have a dance party, stretch, or move
- “X can wait. This moment is enough”
- *set up a therapy appointment (for you or your family)
- unfollow accounts that feed perfectionism
