Tips For Reading With Toddlers

Here are some tips for reading with toddlers! There’s no right or wrong way to read a book with your child. Follow your child’s interest:⠀

🔸Letting your toddler choose which book to read will help them stay engaged for longer

🔸Getting face to face is not always possible, but when you can, you’ll be able to connect with your child through eye contact and facial expressions and you can see/hear each other’s messages better. You can follow your child’s gaze to see what’s catching her interest and add language to help them learn the words (e.g., child looks at the dog on the page, parent can say “dog. The doggy says ruff ruff!”)

🔸You don’t have to start at the beginning, skip pages or don’t finish

🔸Describe the pictures (you don’t have to read the words!)

🔸Shorten or simplify the language

🔸Read the book as many times as your child wants
