Toddlers And Bedtime
“Wait! Let me just show you this dance.” (He couldn’t show you two hours ago??!).
“Ok! Ok! But I just need to go potty!” (You just saw them go potty 5 mins ago).
“Just one more book!” (You just did the three books you promised you would).
“I just need to tuck my trucks into bed, eat an apple, drink some water, go potty 15 more times, do 32 jumps, and I definitely NEED to color in that one coloring book reallllllllllll quick.”
Yeah. The night time delays can just feel endless. And sometimes we’re peeing our pants laughing at the list of things they “just need to do” before bed. But a lot of the time we’re like 🙂 —> 😅—> 🙄—> 🤬
Funny how quickly it can go from cute to get-the-F-to-bed!
So what DO you do when your toddler has an endless request of delays??
✨MAKE A CHART✨ Create a visible bedtime routine chart in your house, so your toddler can actually SEE what needs to happen next.
💫 Pro Tip: Let your toddler be the one to check off✔️ or put a sticker ⭐️ next to each step as you go. They LOVE to feel in control, and this little step can shift them from power struggle mode to collaboration mode.
✨USE BEDTIME CUES✨About an hour before bedtime, start to close shades, dim the lights and play some calm music. Do this every night, so that their little bodies start to wind down with the cues - without them even being aware of it!
✨GIVE WARNINGS✨ “In 10 minutes, we’ll head to bed.” Then “In 5 minutes, we’ll head to bed.”
✨GIVE SMALL CHOICES✨Let your toddler make age appropriate choices. “What two books do you want to read?” “Do you want your truck jammies or your dinosaur jammies?”
